The Mont Réel is a collectively raised mountain that emerged during the summer of 2017 at the Campus MIL’s site for ephemeral projects, the new science campus of the Université de Montréal. The wooden structure provides a place for local initiatives, communities and creatives from all-over to gather, experiment, exchange and contribute to community life.
Built through a 3 week “atelier collaboratif” for university students in art, design and urban planning, the project aimed to prototype ideas for future uses together with neighbors and local initiatives. Together we organized a variety of collective actions around the building of the wooden structure, ranging from graphics and signage, conducting popular science experiments, making sound explorations and singing performances, as well as preparing big feasts and experiencing moments of togetherness.
Campus MIL is located rather centrally in the city of Montreal and is surrounded by neighbourhoods with very different economic and social fabric. Parc Extension, Outremont and Mile End (Ex). Community gardens, the Virage, Bioma Coop are initiatives active onsite. It is them and the inhabitants in the neighbouring districts who the Mont Réel was built for, contributing to the safeguarding of the area for community use amongst rampant development.
